Your instrument cluster does far more than show your speed. It warns you about oil pressure, brakes, airbags and engine faults, and on many cars it's part of the immobiliser too. When it starts playing up, you can lose vital warnings, and your car may fail its MOT.

Warning signs to look out for: needles that stick, drop to zero or jump around; a blank or partly missing display; the dash lighting up one day and not the next; a car that won't start or cuts out straight away; or a battery that keeps going flat overnight.

Most of these faults come down to a handful of causes: worn gauge motors, cracked solder joints from years of heat and vibration, failed display ribbons, or a corrupted memory chip. They're all things we can fix on the bench.

Repairing your original cluster is usually quicker and cheaper than buying a new one from the dealer. It also keeps your car's own data, so there's no need to recode keys or reset the mileage.
